Day 1: Dushanbe – Iskander kul lake

Welcome to Tajikistan, a land of breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage!

Your adventure begins as you arrive at Dushanbe International Airport, located just 4 kilometers from the vibrant capital city of Tajikistan, Dushanbe. This modern airport serves as the gateway to your exploration of the country's wonders.

From here, we'll embark on a mesmerizing journey to Iskanderkul, a high mountain lake nestled in the renowned Fann Mountains. With its serene beauty, Iskanderkul is considered one of the most captivating places in Central Asia. The journey to the lake takes us through the Anzob Pass, offering panoramic views that will leave you breathless.

Upon arrival at Iskanderkul, you'll have the opportunity to stroll along its picturesque beaches, soaking in the tranquility and immensity of the surroundings. But the adventure doesn't stop there! If you are down for it, we'll embark on a 40-minute hike to witness the Niagara of Fann Mountains, also known as the largest waterfall in Tajikistan.

Situated near Iskanderkul, you'll also discover the Snake Lake, with its mysterious allure.

Snake lake derives its name from its unique shape, resembling a sinuous serpent winding through the rugged landscape. Surrounded by majestic mountains and lush greenery, the Snake Lake boasts crystal-clear turquoise waters that mirror the breathtaking scenery that envelopes it. The serene ambiance of the lake invites you to immerse yourself in its beauty and tranquility. As you gaze into its depths, you may catch a glimpse of aquatic life gracefully gliding beneath the surface, adding to the allure and sense of wonder.

And just 5 kilometers further, you’ll meet the Fife Springs. 

The Fife Springs are a natural wonder; they form a series of small pools and rivulets that meander through the landscape, creating a picturesque sight to behold. The mineral-rich waters flow over rocks and through the verdant vegetation, adding a touch of vibrant green to the scene. The Fife Springs hold significance beyond their beauty. Locals believe that the waters possess healing properties, capable of soothing ailments and revitalizing the body and mind. The springs have become a popular destination for those seeking relaxation and holistic wellness, providing a respite from the stresses of everyday life.

After an unforgettable day of exploration, we'll have lunch at the Iskander kul restaurant, where you can immerse yourself in Tajik cuisine. Energized and rejuvenated, we'll make our way back to Dushanbe, the capital city. For a restful night's sleep, we have arranged accommodations at Hotel Shumon Dushanbe. Here, you can relax and reflect on the wonders you've experienced, ready to embark on the next chapter of your Tajikistan expedition.

Day 2: Dushanbe – Kalaiy-hum

Welcome to Day 2 of your extraordinary expedition through Tajikistan! Today's itinerary takes us from the capital towards the eastern part of the country.

As we depart from the capital, we'll be greeted by scenic hills of lush wheat plantations, a testament to the region's agricultural abundance. Our drive will follow the railroad, taking us through the captivating Dangara District. Crossing over a mountain pass, we'll arrive at the impressive Nurek water reserve, where the expansive sky frames the spectacular landscape. 

Continuing our journey, the landscapes gradually transform. The barren-ness gives way to the sight of bushes and trees. Cultivated lands, vibrant wheat plantations, and barley fields dot the countryside. Mud brick houses, electric grids, and glimpses of local villages offer glimpses into the everyday lives of the people who call this region home. In Dangara, we may encounter cattle breeders tending to their cows, sheep, and goats, showcasing the pastoral charm of the area. Fields become greener and greener, painting a picturesque scene as we make our way to the ancient 10th-century city of Hulbuk. Please note that our visit to Hulbuk will be shorter to ensure we have ample time for the rest of our journey.

Continuing onwards, we'll drive a bit further before reaching Kulob city, where we can make a stop to purchase local fruits, bread, and snacks, allowing you to savor the flavors of the region. Just outside the city, we'll have lunch at a restaurant, refueling for the adventures ahead. Our route then leads us to the Shurabad pass, characterized by its dry and hot climate, accompanied by a gentle breeze. Upon reaching the summit, we'll pause at a checkpoint, taking in the refreshing coolness of the air as the landscape transforms once again.

Finally, we'll reach the famous Oxus River, which marks the border with Afghanistan. As we descend towards the river, you'll have the opportunity to observe the livelihoods and customs of Afghan people, providing a unique insight into their way of life.

To ensure a comfortable night's rest, we have arranged accommodations at the guest house "Roma" in Kalay-hum. Here, you can unwind and reflect on the remarkable experiences of the day, ready to embrace the adventures that await you on Day 3 of your Tajikistan expedition.

Day 3: Kalaihum – Gizev Valley

Today, we will venture into the remarkable Bartang Valley, located near Rushan and tracing the path alongside the majestic Panj River.

Our expedition begins as we cross the scenic Vanj Valley, gradually making our way into the Pamir Region, where we will have the privilege of meeting the warm and hospitable Pamiri population. Along the way, be prepared to feast your eyes on a tapestry of captivating villages, each offering breathtaking views of the valley that will leave you in awe.

After a morning of exploration, we will stop for lunch at a traditional chaikana, where you can eat while taking in the surrounding beauty and mingling with fellow travelers. Continuing our journey, we will drive to a point just before Geziev Valley, covering approximately 25 kilometers. Once we cross the bridge, we embark on a 3-hour hike uphill. Don't worry, the effort will be rewarded with stunning vistas and a truly immersive experience!

Arriving at Geziev, you will be greeted by the charm of this picturesque village nestled near a small lake. The tranquility of the surroundings will envelop you as you settle into your homestay at Minira. Immerse yourself in the local way of life, interact with the friendly residents, and gain a deeper understanding of the Pamiri culture that has thrived in this region for centuries.

As the day comes to a close, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a restful night's sleep, surrounded by the serene beauty of Geziev Valley. The homestay offers a unique chance to connect with the local community, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Tajikistan's Bartang Valley and the enchanting Pamir Region hold untold wonders, and Day 3 of our expedition allows you to truly embrace the natural splendor and cultural richness of this extraordinary destination.

Day 4: Gizev Valley – Ishakashim

We begin our day in Gizev, where we'll set out on a morning walk that leads us to the next set of stunning lakes.

As we ascend, be prepared to be mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty that unfolds before you. These serene lakes, nestled amidst the mountains, offer a tranquil oasis where you can immerse yourself in nature's embrace. After enjoying the natural splendor, we will make our way back, walking downhill until we reach the bridge, a journey of approximately 2 hours. From there, we'll continue our expedition with a scenic drive to Khorog, where lunch awaits us at a local Tajik restaurant.

Our journey continues as we drive towards Ishkashim, the administrative center of the Wakhan Valley. This region is not only ethnologically and historically significant but also boasts a unique cultural landscape that will captivate your senses. Along the way, we'll make a special stop at Garm-e Chasma, renowned for its hot springs. Choose to take a refreshing break and soak in the therapeutic waters (optional), allowing the natural minerals to rejuvenate your body and soul.

As the day comes to a close, we'll settle into the Guest House "Nodir" in Ishkashim, where you can unwind and reflect on the incredible experiences of the day.

Day 5: Ishakashim – Langar

Today, we make our way to the mouth of the Wakhan River valley.

This is a historically significant location where the 19th-century Great Game between the Russian and British empires came to an end. It is here that we embark on a road that winds along the north side of the river. To fully appreciate the grandeur of the region, we'll make several stops along the way, including a scenic picnic spot that offers sweeping views of the Pamir Mountains to the left and the majestic Hindu Kush Mountains to the right. Here, amidst nature's splendor, we'll have our meal.

Continuing our journey, we'll encounter the remarkable Khakha Fortress, an ancient structure dating back to the third century BC. Rising from a natural rock platform, this fortress stands as a testament to the region's rich history and architectural prowess. Just a short distance away, we'll find the intriguing Ismaili mazar (tomb) of Shah-i-Mardan Hazrati Ali, offering a glimpse into the religious and cultural practices of the area. Our exploration doesn't stop there. We'll proceed to the Zoroastrian "Fortress of Fire Worshippers," a site of significant historical and spiritual importance. As we ascend the hillside, we'll discover the mesmerizing hot springs at Bibi Fatima. With its mineral-rich and salty waters, the crystal-clear springs create a serene and rejuvenating oasis amidst the rugged landscapes.

Next, we'll visit Yamg, where a stone pillar with a hole awaits our discovery. This unique pillar was once used to calculate a solar calendar, a testament to the scientific knowledge and astronomical prowess of the ancient inhabitants of the region. Afterward, we'll have lunch before continuing our drive through the enchanting Wakhan Valley, making stops at various points of interest that dot the route. Above the village of Vrang, a truly awe-inspiring sight awaits. On a cliff-side adorned with caves, stands a Buddhist complex dating back to the 4th to 7th centuries. This testament to the region's diverse religious and cultural heritage invites us to step back in time and witness the ancient echoes of the past.

As the day draws to a close, we'll find rest at a guest house in Langar, situated at an elevation of 2900 meters.

Day 6: Langar – Alichur

Gear up for a day of beautiful and breathtaking landscapes as we venture into the Eastern Pamir region of Tajikistan!

Day 6 of our expedition calls for an early start, as we embark on a long drive that’ll take us away from the enchanting Wakhan Valley. As we progress onwards, the habitat subtly transforms into a semi-desert landscape. Our path follows the course of the Pamir River, which originates from the famous Zor Kul Lake and bids farewell to Afghanistan. From this point forward, we embark on an ascent, witnessing the elevation gradually increase as we venture deeper into the Eastern Pamir. Our journey takes us to the majestic Khargush Pass, standing tall at an impressive elevation of 4,320 meters. Passing through a checkpoint, we enter a world of rocky desert hills that stretch out before us in a steady ascent. As we reach the summit of the pass, you will be accompanied by awe-inspiring panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Continuing our drive, we encounter two small lakes that grace our path before reaching the renowned Pamir Highway. Here are some pictures we took of the lovely locals and breathtaking mountain ranges we came across while in Pamir Highway! Here, we will then make a turn towards Bulunkul Lake, a shimmering gem located just 16 kilometers away from the main river. It is here where we pause for a well-deserved lunch or picnic (if the weather is good!) amidst the tranquil surroundings.

We then embark on a 2-hour trek to Yashil Til Lake, a journey that rewards us with even more astounding vistas and a sense of serenity. Embrace the warmth of friendship and the hospitality extended by the locals, and perhaps you'll even catch the gentle sounds of snoring yaks, a reminder of the rich tapestry of life in this region. We then resume our drive to Alichur village. Tonight, we'll experience the traditional shepherd lifestyle firsthand, as we settle into accommodations that offer comfort and a glimpse into the time-honored practices of the local communities.

Day 6 of our Tajikistan expedition offers an extraordinary journey through Eastern Pamir's vast landscapes and pristine lakes. Stay tuned for Day 7, where we'll continue our exploration, unraveling the wonders that await us in this majestic region.

Day 7: Alichur – Garty-Gumbez

Day 7 takes us on a journey of uncovering hidden gems and immersing ourselves in the rich heritage of this land.

After breakfast, our adventure begins with a scenic drive to Garty Gumbez. As we traverse the rugged terrain, the beauty of the Kara Kum pasture will unfold before you. This picturesque landscape showcases the harmony between nature and the traditional way of life in this region. Along the way, we'll make a stop at the sacred Ak Balyk Lake. This crystal-clear body of water holds deep spiritual significance and is considered a holy place. 

Continuing our journey, we'll proceed to the Caravan Sarai, also known as Chine Tum, situated just 9 kilometers from the main road near Bash Gumbez village. En route, we'll make a fascinating stop at the Meteorite Crater, offering a glimpse into the cosmic wonders that have shaped our planet. As we ascend further, we'll reach the Observatory, where panoramic views of the majestic mountains await us.

Our next destination is the Shakhty rock paintings, situated at an elevation of 4,200 meters. These ancient artworks date back to 8,000 - 5,000 B.C., showcasing unique figures placed beneath animal representations. The intricate artistry is reminiscent of the clavicorn figures seen in Paleolithic art, offering a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and artistic expressions of early civilizations.

As the day draws to a close, we'll find rest and rejuvenation at Gartygumbez hot springs, where the soothing waters await. Accommodations for the night will be provided at Kuban Homestay Yurt, allowing you to experience the traditional shepherd lifestyle firsthand.

Day 8: Garty-Gumbez – Khorog

Day 8 promises an adventure like no other, where you may have the opportunity to witness the majestic Marco Polo sheep, explore the stunning Zorkul Lake, and journey through scenic mountain passes.

After breakfast, we begin the day by capturing unforgettable moments with the magnificent Marco Polo sheep. These elusive creatures, renowned for their impressive horns and regal presence, roam these rugged lands. We'll make a stop to observe and photograph these iconic creatures, preserving the memories of this unique wildlife encounter. (Do note that it is possible we may not get to see these sheep! These animals are not held captive, and they freely roam the land so they are not always where we expect them to be.)

Our journey continues as we drive to Kara Julga, a summer shepherd's place that offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the local communities. Embrace the simplicity and tranquility of this pastoral setting, and perhaps even engage with the shepherds to learn more about their way of life. Next, we venture to the captivating Zorkul Lake, where nature's beauty unfolds in all its glory. Immerse yourself in the serenity of this pristine lake, surrounded by towering mountains and picturesque landscapes.

After lunch, you'll have the opportunity to embark on a few hours of walking at your own pace to the enchanting Kok Jigit Lake. This serene walk allows you to connect with nature on a deeper level, as you meander through the picturesque surroundings, taking in the tranquility and beauty that surrounds you. As the day progresses, we'll continue our journey towards Khorog, traversing the scenic Koitezek Pass, which sits at an elevation of 4,200 meters. The winding mountain road offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, serving as a testament to the awe-inspiring beauty of Tajikistan. Finally, we arrive in Khorog, where we'll enjoy our dinner at the "Tat-mirzo" Guest House.

Day 9: Khorog – Kalaihum

Today, we continue our expedition through Tajikistan's breathtaking landscapes. Day 9 starts us on a mesmerizing drive through the Darvoz district, offering gorgeous scenery, picturesque villages, and an authentic glimpse into the local way of life.

After breakfast, we set off on our adventure, embarking on a long and captivating drive spanning 360 kilometers. The road winds through the stunning valleys, following the course of a river that gradually widens as we approach the Afghan border. As we ascend, the landscape unfolds before our eyes, showcasing the beauty of the surrounding mountains and lush greenery. Our journey takes us to the charming village of Kalaikhum. On the way, we'll have lunch.

Afterwards, we'll continue our drive towards the serene village of Kalay-hum. Upon arrival, we'll be warmly welcomed at the same guest house we stayed in on Day 2, where accommodations, refreshing showers, and friendly reception await us. This guest house will serve as our base, allowing us to relax and rejuvenate before our last day of adventures.

Day 10: Kalaihum – Dushanbe

On our last day, we begin with a memorable drive from Kalaiy-Hum to the vibrant capital city of Dushanbe, traversing mountainous roads and encountering the warm hospitality of the Tajik people along the way.

As the morning sun rises, we embark on a scenic drive along a mountain road, taking in the breathtaking views that surround us. The journey leads us over the high Khoburubot Pass, located at an elevation of 3,252 meters. This pass is a gateway to the majestic Pamir Tract, and as we ascend, we are greeted by the most picturesque river valleys and awe-inspiring gorges that showcase the natural beauty of the region.

Throughout our drive, we'll have the opportunity to make stops at various points along the way. These moments of rest allow us to immerse ourselves in the serene surroundings, capturing stunning photographs of the majestic mountains and flowing rivers that grace our path. As we journey through small villages, you'll have the opportunity to witness the hardworking and hospitable nature of the Tajik people. Their deep respect for traditions and rich folklore adds a touch of cultural authenticity to this remarkable journey. For those seeking a taste of exoticism and a desire to explore the ethnic and cultural diversity of the region, this trip offers a truly captivating experience.

As the day draws to a close, we'll have dinner at a local restaurant. For our final night in Tajikistan, we'll be accommodated in the same hotel we stayed in on the first night, where we can find showers, welcoming reception, and a peaceful night's rest.

Day 10 of our Tajikistan expedition unveils the raw beauty of the country's mountainous terrain, introduces us to the warmth of the Tajik people, and immerses us in the rich tapestry of their cultural traditions. 

Day 11: Home sweet home!

As our expedition comes to a close, we bid a fond farewell to the Pamirs and prepare for our departure. On this last day of our journey, we'll drive to the airport three hours before the flight, reminiscing about the incredible experiences and treasured memories we have gathered along the way. These enchanting landscapes have left an indelible mark on our hearts, and we hope that they will bring you joy, inspiration, and a deeper connection with nature too, when its your time to venture on this expedition!

Upon payment of 50% non-refundable deposit, you will secure a spot for 1x Tajikistan group expedition (June to end September). The total price for the trip is S$7,990 nett inclusive of flights. The remaining 50% is to be paid 8 weeks prior to trip commencement.
