Day 1: Antananarivo

Welcome to Tana (an affectionate nickname for Antananarivo), the Heartbeat of Madagascar!

Welcome to Madagascar! Upon your arrival, Our Malagasy team will be there to greet you and whisk you away to start your adventure. First things first, we'll make sure you're connected by guiding you to purchase a SIM card right at the airport. Then, we'll take a scenic 30-minute drive to your hotel where you can check-in and drop off your luggage, settling in for the journey ahead.

Next up, we'll take you on another ride, this time to a delightful restaurant where you'll not only feast on local dishes but also get your hands dirty with some cooking lessons. Picture yourself learning the secrets of Malagasy cuisine while savoring every moment!

After a satisfying evening of culinary exploration, it's time to unwind and rest your head. You'll spend the night at the luxurious Radisson Blue or a similarly cozy accommodation, where you can recharge for the adventures that await you tomorrow. 

Day 2: Antananarivo to Antsirabe

Good morning, adventurers! We’ll start the day with a hearty breakfast at your hotel, fueling up for the exciting journey ahead. At 7:30 a.m., we'll be hitting the road bound for Antsirabe, the third largest city in Madagascar and known as the "City of Water”. Antsirabe captivates visitors with its charming streets, vibrant markets, and thermal springs, offering a delightful blend of colonial architecture and Malagasy culture.

As we embark on our four-hour drive (covering ~170km of land), prepare to be mesmerized by the breathtaking views of the highlands adorned with terraced rice fields. Along the way, we'll make a pit stop in Ambatolampy, a charming town renowned for its unique pottery workshops. Here, you’ll explore a workshop where you’ll get to see pots being crafted using recycled materials—a testament to Madagascar's commitment to sustainability. Spend about 20 minutes admiring the artistry and creativity of local artisans before we resume our journey.

Afterward, we'll indulge in a delightful lunch at a nearby restaurant, savoring the flavors of Malagasy cuisine, before hitting the road once more towards Antsirabe.

Upon arriving in Antsirabe, settle into your hotel and take a moment to refresh and rejuvenate. Then, it's time to immerse yourself in the charm of this vibrant city. Explore gemstone shops adorned with dazzling treasures, where you may find the perfect keepsake to commemorate your journey. Delve into workshops showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of zebu horns and miniature crafts, gaining insight into Madagascar's rich cultural heritage.

As the day winds down, gather for a delicious dinner at your hotel, savoring the flavors of local cuisine and reflecting on the day's adventures. Tomorrow holds even more wonders in store, but for now, let's revel in the magic of Antsirabe.

Day 3: Antsirabe to Manandona

Cycling Through Madagascar's Scenic Splendor.

  • Involves an approximately 2-hour bike ride (~23km, at a pace tailored to suit you and your fellow adventurers), OR a drive to visit the famous three lakes of Antsirabe; Andraikiba, Tritiva and Tatamarina

Indulge in a delightful breakfast at your Antsirabe hotel before gearing up for an exhilarating 2.5h bike ride to Manandona. Embark on a scenic journey along the RN7, traversing 23 km south of Antsirabe amidst picturesque rice fields. 

RN7 refers to Route Nationale 7, which is a major highway in Madagascar. It runs from the capital city of Antananarivo in the center of the country to Tulear (also known as Toliara) on the southwestern coast. The RN7 is a significant transportation route in Madagascar, passing through diverse landscapes, including highlands, forests, and savannas, and connecting several towns and cities along its path.

Upon arrival, immerse yourself in the tranquil ambiance of Manandona, engaging with the local community to witness their daily rituals and agricultural traditions. We’ll spend the afternoon delving into village life, interacting with villagers, and participating in their activities to gain deeper cultural insights. As dusk approaches, we’ll then head back to Antsirabe, concluding the day with a delicious dinner and a comfortable overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 4: Antsirabe to Miandrivazo

Exploring Madagascar's Tranquil Routes

Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel! Then, at 9:00 a.m., we’ll take off on a scenic drive to Miandrivazo, a journey spanning approximately five hours. Along the way, we'll pause in Betafo to marvel at the breathtaking landscapes of the rice fields, and take about 1.5h for exploration amidst these picturesque surroundings.

As we continue our drive, we'll make a pit stop for lunch in Mandoto, a charming town situated midway to our destination. After replenishing our energy, we'll resume our journey towards Miandrivazo, where we'll check in at Hotel Soa Lia or a similar accommodation upon arrival.

Upon settling in, take a moment to fulfill any necessary formalities with the local authorities before indulging in some well-deserved free time to explore the vibrant town of Miandrivazo at your leisure. We’ll then cap off your evening with dinner at the hotel, savoring the flavors of Malagasy cuisine before retiring for the night, ready to embark on the next leg of your Madagascar adventure.

Day 5 and 6: Down the Tsiribihina River

Exploring the Heart of Madagascar's Wilderness

  • Involves a boat ride (approx 8 hours each day, covering ~1650km across all 3 days. Also includes a dance session with local kids!

Awake to a delightful breakfast at your hotel! At 7:30 a.m., we'll proceed to transfer to Masiakampy, which takes a scenic 35km journey from Miandrivazo, and also marks the beginning of our Tsiribihina River expedition.

  • The Tsiribihina River, winding its way through the heart of Madagascar, isn't just a waterway but a lifeline for the local communities and a treasure trove of biodiversity. Beyond its scenic beauty, the river holds cultural significance, as it has been used for centuries as a vital trade route and a source of sustenance for the people living along its banks.

    One fascinating aspect of the Tsiribihina River is its role in shaping the unique ecosystem of Madagascar. The river and its surrounding areas are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including rare species of birds, reptiles, and mammals found nowhere else on Earth. It serves as a vital habitat for numerous species, some of which are endemic to Madagascar, contributing to the island's remarkable biodiversity.

    Moreover, the Tsiribihina River offers travelers a captivating journey through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to towering limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls. Traveling along its meandering course provides an opportunity to witness the natural wonders and cultural heritage of Madagascar up close, making it a memorable adventure for nature enthusiasts and explorers alike.

Upon reaching Masiakampy, we'll load our luggage onto the awaiting boat and set sail along the tranquil waters of the Tsiribihina River. As we cruise, keep an eye out for the diverse array of bird species, chameleons, and lemurs that call the riverside home.

Our journey will include a stop for a delightful lunch under the shade of mango trees, followed by a visit to the captivating Anosinampela waterfall. Here, you can take a refreshing dip in the natural waters, rejuvenating your spirits amidst the lush surroundings.

As evening approaches, we'll arrive at our designated camping site, where you'll be treated to a hearty dinner under the starlit sky. Afterwards, it will be time to retire to your cozy tents, where you'll drift off to sleep enveloped by the soothing sounds of the wilderness.

As you gaze up at the twinkling stars above, you'll find yourself immersed in the magic of the moment, experiencing a sense of serenity and connection unlike any other.

On Day 6, we rise and shine to a nourishing breakfast onboard the boat as we embark on the second day of our river descent! Prepare to be captivated by the stunning scenery as we navigate through the gorges of Bemaraha, marveling at the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Along the way, we'll make a stop at the village of Begidro, offering a glimpse into the daily lives and traditions of the local villagers. As night falls, we'll arrive at our designated camping site, where you'll enjoy a dinner accompanied by lively music and dance performances by local musicians, adding a touch of cultural vibrancy to our unforgettable journey along the Tsiribihina River.

Day 7: Belo sur Tsiribihina to Bekopaka

Navigating Madagascar's Wild Waters

As we embark on our final leg of the Tsiribihina River journey, keep your senses heightened for glimpses of wildlife such as turtles, bats, and crocodiles as we cross the river after lunch. We’ll then bid farewell to our trusty motorboat and transition to our awaiting 4WD vehicle.

Our next destination is Bekopaka, and we'll set off from the riverbank around 1:00 p.m., embarking on a scenic three-hour drive. As we traverse the rugged terrain, be sure to soak in the breathtaking scenery that unfolds before us, a testament to Madagascar's natural beauty.

Upon our arrival in Bekopaka, we'll check in at the welcoming accommodations of Soleil des Tsingy or a similar hotel. Take this opportunity to relax and unwind after the day's journey, reflecting on the memories we've made along the Tsiribihina River.

As night falls, indulge in a delicious dinner at Soleil des Tsingy, savoring the flavors of Malagasy cuisine, before retiring for the night. Tomorrow promises more adventures amidst the wonders of Bekopaka.

Day 8: Unveiling Nature's Masterpiece

A Journey through Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park

  • A hike tailored to you and your fellow adventurer’s pace and preferences, OR a visit to Bekopaka village to experience the daily life of locals living there

Embark on an adventure to Big Tsingy after a hearty breakfast at Soleil des Tsingy at 7:00 a.m. We’ll journey by 4WD to this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site, approximately 17 kilometers away!

  • Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, located in western Madagascar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its otherworldly limestone formations known as "Tsingy." The term "Tsingy" translates to "where one cannot walk barefoot" in the Malagasy language, aptly describing the razor-sharp pinnacles and deep crevices that make up this unique landscape.

    The park is a geological marvel, featuring limestone formations shaped by centuries of erosion, creating a labyrinth of jagged peaks, caves, and gorges. This extraordinary terrain is home to diverse flora and fauna, including several species endemic to Madagascar. Visitors can explore the park through a network of trails and suspension bridges, providing a thrilling and immersive experience.

    Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is not only a natural wonder but also a cultural treasure, as it preserves the rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems of Madagascar. The park offers a glimpse into the island's geological history and showcases the importance of conservation efforts in protecting its distinctive natural heritage.

We’ll be going for a seven-hour exploration journey along the Broadway trail, traversing the captivating landscapes of Andranotsara and Andamozavaky. Ensure you're equipped with sturdy boots, sun cream, and mosquito repellent for the trek. Marvel at the unique limestone formations and breathtaking views before returning to the hotel in Bekopaka for dinner and a peaceful night's rest.

DAY 9: Bekopaka to Morondava

Trekking from Bekopaka to Morondava Through Madagascar's Iconic Giants

We’ll embark on an early morning adventure after breakfast at Soleil des Tsingy, with a 7:00 a.m. departure by 4WD towards Morondava. Enjoy a scenic 3-hour drive to Belo Tsiribihina, where a lunch stop awaits. 

Following lunch, we’ll take a 45-minute ferry crossing over the Tsiribihina River at Belo Tsiribihina! Upon reaching Semary, we’ll then set out on the trail to Morondava, discovering the famed Sacred Baobab and Lover Baobabs along the way.

  • The Sacred Baobab and Lover Baobabs are iconic natural landmarks located in the region of Morondava, Madagascar, known for their cultural significance and breathtaking beauty.

    The Sacred Baobab, also known as "Adansonia grandidieri," is a majestic baobab tree revered by the local communities for its spiritual significance. This ancient tree stands tall amidst the landscape, symbolizing resilience and endurance. Its massive trunk and sprawling branches provide shade and shelter, making it a gathering place for ceremonies and rituals.

    The Lover Baobabs, on the other hand, are two baobab trees that have grown intertwined, their branches embracing each other in a natural display of affection. This unique phenomenon has earned them the nickname "Lover Baobabs" and has become a symbol of love and unity in nature.

    Both the Sacred Baobab and Lover Baobabs attract visitors from around the world, who come to marvel at their beauty and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of the surrounding landscape. These magnificent trees serve as reminders of the profound connection between nature and culture, inspiring awe and reverence in all who encounter them.

We’ll continue towards the iconic Alley of Baobabs, reaching it in approximately 3 hours from Semary. You’ll get to witness the breathtaking sunset, immersing yourself in the magical ambiance and capturing memorable photographs at this renowned natural spectacle. After enjoying the sunset, drive for about an hour from the Baobab Alley to Morondava.

Upon arrival in Morondava, you’ll settle in at the Vezo Beach Hotel or a similar accommodation for a delightful dinner and a restful night.

Day 10: Mangrove Forest, Betania village, pierre pedro

Exploring Mangroves, Betania Village, and Pierre Pedro's Mystique.

  • Involves a 1-hour hike, at a pace tailored to suit the group, a 30-minute drive to the airport that covers about 10km, and a flight to Tana

Enjoy a good breakfast before departing from your hotel at 7:30 a.m. by pirogue to explore the enchanting Mangrove Forest and Betania village. You’ll get to spend approximately two and a half hours immersing yourself in the serene beauty of the mangrove forest and discovering the vibrant culture of Betania village.

After the visit, we return to your hotel to collect your luggage before heading to the airport to catch your flight to Tana. Upon arrival in Tana, we’re going on a scenic drive to visit Pierre Pedro, a fascinating cultural site located approximately an hour and a half from the airport. Enjoy your time immersing in the historical significance and unique architecture of Pierre Pedro before continuing to Radisson Blue or a similar hotel for check-in.

  • Pierre Pedro is a significant historical and cultural site located near Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar. This unique attraction is renowned for its intriguing rock formations and ancient rock carvings, which provide insights into the region's rich history and heritage.

    The name "Pierre Pedro" translates to "Peter's Stone" in English, and the site is believed to have been used for various purposes by early inhabitants of Madagascar. It is characterized by large stone structures and carvings, some dating back hundreds of years.

    Visitors to Pierre Pedro have the opportunity to explore the fascinating rock formations and learn about the cultural significance of the site. The ancient carvings depict scenes from daily life, religious rituals, and traditional beliefs, offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who once inhabited the area.

    Pierre Pedro is not only a place of historical interest but also a serene and picturesque destination, surrounded by natural beauty and lush landscapes. We’ll conclude your last evening in Madagascar with a celebratory dinner and a comfortable overnight stay, before it’s time to head home the next day.

Day 11: Home Sweet Home!

After a hearty breakfast and check-out from the hotel, it's unfortunately time to bid farewell to Madagascar!

As the sun rises over Madagascar, casting a golden glow across the landscape, it's time to bid farewell to this enchanting island that has captured our hearts. After savoring a hearty breakfast and checking out from our hotel, we reluctantly prepare to embark on the journey homeward.

As we gather our belongings and reflect on the incredible experiences we've shared, we're filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the memories we've created and the connections we've made. From the vibrant markets of Tana to the serene beauty of the rainforests and the rugged coastline, Madagascar has left an indelible mark on our souls.

As we're safely transferred to the airport, we carry with us not only our luggage but also a treasure trove of moments and lessons that will stay with us long after we return home. This journey has been more than just a vacation – it's been a transformative experience that has expanded our horizons, deepened our appreciation for the world around us, and enriched our lives in ways we never imagined.
