Beyond Limits 7: conquering kyrgyzstan’s majestic mountains in Support of Breast Cancer Warriors

Join us for Beyond Limits 7, happening from 4th-16th July 2024!

This is Beyond Expeditions' 7th charity expedition, and also our first time hosting Beyond Limits in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, as a trek along the historically significant Silk Road!

This time, we are here to raise much-needed funds for our inspiring breast cancer patients from the Breast Cancer Foundation!

Registration is now open, and we’re looking for survivors of breast cancer, and like-minded expedition-ers who believe in our cause for supporting the potential of women with breast cancer.

We’re capping it at 20 participants total; read on to find out more!

In the heart of the breathtaking Kyrgyzstan mountains, we introduce Beyond Limits 7, an expedition that will take us through the ancient Silk Road, a historic network of trade routes that bridged East and West.

Read on to uncover more about why we selected the Silk Road for this 7th edition of Beyond Limits, the unique twist we added to this expedition, and the meaningful connection it shares with our commitment to supporting Breast Cancer Foundation.

Feel their weight on your chest.

Breast cancer, a formidable adversary, presents challenges that often loom like towering mountains.

In these moments of hardship, the courageous women facing breast cancer need our unwavering support. The Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) stands as a pillar of strength, offering a multitude of vital programs such as the Volunteer Befriending Programme and the Positive Appearance Scheme.

In this trek, you’ll each be carrying weights on your chest, symbolic of the weighted challenges that breast cancer patients experience both literally and metaphorically.

  • Physically, breast cancer patients experience pain or tightness in their chest due to cancerous breast lumps, and also difficulty with breathing.

And metaphorically, breast cancer patients struggle with several challenges that could cause their chest to feel tight. There’s the emotional turmoil of fear and anxiety to the physical toll of surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy, the journey can be arduous. The financial burdens, even with insurance, can cast a daunting shadow, leading to financial stress for patients and their families. And the journey is laden with uncertainty, with constant concerns about the future, particularly the specter of recurrence.

We want these chest weights to be a way for us to better empathise with their struggles, while also being a way for us to challenge ourselves beyond physical, mental and emotional limits. So if you come onboard, be ready to discover what you are truly capable of, all while standing in support of women diagnosed with breast cancer.

  • This expedition isn't solely about reminding breast cancer patients of their indomitable spirit. It's also about showing YOU that you possess the strength to conquer challenges beyond your wildest dreams. It's about proving that when we unite with purpose, we can move boundless mountains of challenges, regardless of how impossible they seem.

Join us on this life-changing journey, where the mountains we face are not just the ones we conquer in Kyrgyzstan but also the metaphorical peaks of adversity and doubt that we overcome together. Together, we can move mountains, reaffirming the incredible power of human connection and unwavering hope.

More about the Silk Road route.

We’ve asked our local guides in Kyrgyzstan some important questions you might have about the Silk Road route. And here’s what we feel you might want to know;

  • The most challenging part of this route would be when you have to cross the different mountain passes. There are several of these during the trek and some of them are extremely steep and rocky.

    • Juuku Pass (3,800m)

    • Jetim Bel Pass (4,350m)

    • Ak-Bel Pass (3,600m)

    • Ishtik Pass (3,689m)

    • Seok Pass (4,028m)

When it comes to weather conditions, the weather forecast says it will rain mostly in the afternoons and they wouldn’t be heavy rains. According to our local guide on the ground, the temperature will range from 0-12°C at altitudes more than 3000 meters, and can go up to 20°C and above at lower altitudes.

But regardless, be prepared for weather conditions to go south any moment, as Mother Nature is often unpredictable in the great outdoors!

  • The Silk Road encompasses an area where shepherds traditionally seek respite during the summer, remaining there until the middle of fall. Amidst this pastoral scene, they engage in activities like milk production and cheese-making, further enriching the region's heritage.

  • The historical narrative of the Silk Road reveals a complex tapestry of events. At the dawn of the 20th century, it became a refuge for those fleeing or seeking refuge in China. This period in history witnessed the tragic loss of many lives within these borders.

  • The Silk Road is not only rich in cultural and geographical diversity but also bears witness to historical conflicts of immense magnitude. Among these is the Dungan Rebellion, involving the Muslim population of Yunnan in southwestern China, which occurred during a similar period. The consequences of this rebellion led to the resettlement of Chinese Dungan people in the territory of the Russian Empire, now encompassing Kyrgyzstan and neighboring CIS states, as well as parts of southwestern Mongolia. This devastating conflict, resulting in the loss of between 8 and 15 million lives, stands as one of the bloodiest military conflicts in human history.

  • Notably, Swiss traveler Ella Mayer embarked on an expedition through these very mountains. An intrepid photographer and explorer, she contributed to the preservation of memories from these lands.

General itinerary

  • Upon your arrival in Bishkek, our driver and guide will warmly welcome you at the airport. After a delicious breakfast and a quick briefing, we'll embark on a scenic 4-hour journey to Tamga village. Along the way, we'll make a brief stop in Kochkor, where you can explore a local handicraft center.

If time allows, there's a chance to visit a couple of local families to witness a fascinating yurt-building demonstration or even an impressive eagle show. Finally, we'll settle in for the night at a comfortable guesthouse in Tamga village.

  • In the morning, after a 60-minute transfer, we'll arrive in Juuku Valley, where our trek will cover a distance of approximately 15 kilometers, with an elevation gain of 500 meters along a rugged dirt road. The first 7 kilometers lead us along the left bank of the river, offering stunning views of the old Silk Road trail on the right bank.

Our ultimate goal for the day is to reach the crossroads with the Ashu-Kashka Suu gorge, where you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and historical significance of this remarkable region.

  • Today's objective is to reach the base of Juuku Pass, which stands at an elevation of 3,800 meters. The hike is relatively straightforward and covers a distance of 15 kilometers.

As you progress, you'll be treated to breathtaking natural landscapes and the opportunity to soak in the tranquil beauty of the region. The day's descent is about 400 meters, and you'll conclude your day's trek by setting up camp near the Chong Tash campsite.

  • After breakfast, venture deeper into the mountains, with the goal of crossing over Juuku Pass. The trek will average around 3,600 meters in altitude, providing numerous opportunities for breathtaking photos along the way. Once we conquer the pass, we will set up camp for the night near a tranquil lake, making sure it's a sheltered spot free from strong winds.

  • Today, you'll be crossing the Jetim Bel Pass. Start by crossing the Arabel-Suu river via a bridge and then follow the main road to the gold mine, heading west for about 4 kilometers to reach the Jetim Bel valley. From there, it's an 11-kilometer hike with a 300-meter elevation gain to reach the 4,350-meter-high Jetim Bel Pass.

On the south side of the pass, you'll find a charming, 200-meter-long lake. Enjoy an easy 2-3 hour hike before reaching your campsite for the night, located on the serene shores of the Taragaï river.

  • Following the ancient Silk Road, today's goal is to cross over to Ak-Bel. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as Marco Polo sheep, ibex, and more along the way.

You'll be spending the night in tents, surrounded by the wild beauty of the landscape.

  • Your journey continues as you venture further to reach Ishtik, an ancient caravanserai. The primary goal for today is to cross over Ishtik Pass, experiencing both the historical significance of the region and the natural beauty it offers.

For your overnight accommodation, you'll either stay in tents, immersing yourself in the rugged outdoors, or in a shepherd hut, providing a unique and authentic experience in this remote area.

  • After morning tea and breakfast, you'll head towards the Chinese border, where you'll be treated to breathtaking views and come across Kyrgyz military patrols at certain points. Your goal for today is to reach Tez Canyon, one of Kyrgyzstan's more remote and stunning locations.

Upon arriving in Tez Canyon, you'll have the chance to share tea with a local family, offering a glimpse into the unique culture of this isolated region. You'll spend the night either in tents, surrounded by the wilderness, or in a shepherd's house, providing an authentic experience in this remote area.

  • Following an early breakfast, your objective will be to prepare and depart for the south side of the Ak-Shyyrak ridge, reaching the quaint settlement of Uch Koshkon. Although little remains of this settlement today, during the Soviet Union, it was one of the few inhabited areas in the entire valley.

For your overnight accommodation, you'll have the choice of staying in tents, surrounded by the unspoiled wilderness, or opting for a shepherd's hut, providing a glimpse into the traditional life of this remote region.

  • Today marks your return from Ak-Shyyrak to Karakol, concluding your remote mountain adventure. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to share lunch with a local yak herder's family, providing insight into their traditional way of life.

The journey will take you over the Seok Pass at 4028 meters and then the Barskoon Pass at 3754 meters, both of which offer spectacular mountain views. Upon your arrival in Karakol, you'll have the chance to refresh with a shower and savor a delicious dinner with a welcoming Kyrgyz family.

For your overnight stay, you'll be accommodated in a guesthouse, offering comfort and a chance to reflect on your remarkable journey.

  • Today, you'll embark on a six-hour drive back to Bishkek, taking the opportunity to make stops along the way to capture memorable photographs of the Kyrgyz landscape.

In the evening, a delightful farewell dinner awaits you at a local Kyrgyz ethnic café, located in the heart of Bishkek, where you can savor traditional cuisine and reflect on your incredible journey.

Your overnight accommodation will be provided in a guesthouse, ensuring a comfortable and restful night before your departure.

[How exactly will our funds be used to assist BCF in their mission?]

Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is a commitment to actively raising breast cancer awareness and supporting those affected by breast cancer through psycho-social programmes, support groups and befriending activities. As a  registered charity in Singapore,  BCF is  self-funded and is dependent on public donations to provide quality services and programmes  for more women and their families affected by breast cancer. All participants are asked to fundraise a minimum of SGD$5000 with GIVE.asia, with 100% of the funds going directly to Breast Cancer Foundation. Take note that the funds raised by participants are not part of the expedition costs, which means it cannot be offset.

Here's how the funds raised from this charity expedition will be utilized to support BCF's mission:

  1. Psychosocial Programs: Donations will help fund programs like Healing Through The Arts (HTTA), support groups, and befriending activities, providing essential emotional and psychological support to those affected by breast cancer.

  2. Financial Assistance: Subsidies will be available to women with low income for prostheses, bras, and wigs through BCF's Positive Image and Appearance Scheme and complimentary wig loan program, ensuring that every woman has access to resources that enhance their quality of life during and after treatment.

  3. Awareness and Outreach: Funds will support BCF's efforts to raise breast cancer awareness through talks, outreach events, research, and publications, empowering women with knowledge about early detection and prevention.

  4. Operational Support: Your donations will enable BCF to continue running its flagship Breast Cancer Centre and the Breast Cancer Support Centre @ Khoo Teck Puat hospital, ensuring that women affected by breast cancer receive the highest quality care and support.

Your generosity will make a significant impact in the lives of breast cancer survivors and their families! No amount is too small, and every dollar donated will contribute to making a positive difference. Together, let’s support and empower more women affected by breast cancer, helping them to build self-confidence and resilience on their journey towards recovery!

Let's join hands in the fight against breast cancer and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most!

“Beyond Limits is the essence of living out who we believe we are.

Ask yourself, what limits do you have? And when did you decide to accept these limitations you created for yourself?

How can we break through the concrete boundaries we’ve boxed ourselves in? Simple: an extremely compelling vision.

Once you have that, it’s all crystal clear. No what ifs, no excuses, no blaming others. Because that’s when you rise to a different level of intensity and focus. Where all your shoulds (regrets), have now become your musts. When challenges come your way, you will find a way, if not, you are going to make a way. That’s when the real you shows up. And you will never be able to hide that extreme level of spontaneity and excitement that you burn so passionately with, every moment of your life.

All breakthroughs start with a change in your beliefs.

So... what beliefs do you represent?”

— SCOTT TAY, BE FOUNDER

Take a moment to explore the remarkable experiences shared by previous Beyond Limits participants in their journeys. These stories provide a vivid glimpse into the transformative experiences awaiting you when you choose to push your limits alongside us.

We have Zoe, a cancer survivor; and Allegra, a bubbly and inspirational woman, join us for Beyond Limits 4, a 50km trek across an icy lake at temperatures plunging below -20 degrees celsius to raise funds for the Singapore Cancer Society.

Here’s also a visual ‘journal’ of what our participants went through for BL4, because pictures can speak to you about a journey in ways that words cannot.

Are you a good fit for this charity expedition?

Beyond Limits charity expeditions are not for everyone. We want our participants’ experience to be challenging because of the nature of the expedition, and less so because of the people. So here are several factors you should align with, to know if you are a good fit for the Beyond Limits experience!

  • Even though we have a well-planned itinerary, changes will be made during the trip itself due to unexpected circumstances.

So, if you're not ready to embrace change, then maybe Netflix is a better option than this expedition. If you're open to embracing the unknown, then we think you'll fit right in.

  • No drama queens, no turning against other team members!

Simply put, don’t be ‘toxic’, if we could be Gen-Z with you.

Every team member’s well-being is priority. Period. We work hand-in-hand to ensure we complete the expedition together. We're all about teamwork and supporting one another because we want everyone to have an awesome time, so we need people who are kind, caring, and drama-free. Leave the diva attitude at home, and let's focus on having a positive and fun experience together!

  • There may be instances where cars break down, or weather conditions take a turn for the worse. Regardless, the country’s locals know the land like the back of their hand, and have kept our team safe throughout the years. We love and respect the people of the land we visit, and we trust them to show us the ropes.

If you can't trust the locals, then maybe you should stay home and watch a travel show instead! But, if you're down to learn from and trust the people who know the land best, then you'll feel right at home.

  • For this expedition, we will appoint team leaders within the group to lead each small ‘pod’ (3-4 members each).

Your team leader is there to ensure the well-being of you and your respective team members, working hand in hand with our overall-in-charge, Scott, to ensure everyone’s safety and the expedition runs smoothly. So, if you're the type of person who likes to go rogue, then this might not be the adventure for you.

So, if you're ready to step out of your comfort zone and create some amazing memories, then come join us! Bring your sense of humor, your willingness to learn, and your positive energy, and let's make a difference together.

CHARITY EXPEDITION FAQ

  • Every spot on our charity expedition is invaluable, as we maintain a strict participant limit for each "Beyond Limits" journey to collectively achieve our fundraising and exposure objectives as a unified team.

Upon committing to sign up by placing a deposit, we expect each participant to exemplify responsibility and accountability within the team. This entails active participation in fundraising efforts, spreading awareness of the campaign, and a firm commitment not to withdraw. It's imperative to understand that this is a charity expedition, not just a leisurely holiday trip, so please review our Terms and Conditions for comprehensive guidelines before signing up.

It's worth noting that extensive planning, marketing, logistical arrangements, including fund disbursements in both Singapore and Kyrgyzstan, are meticulously executed for every "Beyond Limits" expedition. Participants should be aware that withdrawal is only considered in extraordinary circumstances, primarily health-related issues or urgent family matters. In such cases, individuals are encouraged to utilize their own travel insurance, and we are more than willing to provide the necessary travel memo to support any claims.

Your commitment and dedication are crucial to the success of our charitable endeavors, and we appreciate your understanding of these guidelines.

  • All proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF), a social service agency which advocates for the early detection of breast cancer and supports the breast cancer community in Singapore. Our funds will support their provision of quality services and programmes for more  women and their families affected by breast cancer.

All participants are asked to fundraise a minimum of SGD$5,000 with GIVE.asia, with 100% of the funds going directly to BCF.

We'll be using GIVE Asia, an online campaigning platform. We've used it for our past campaigns, like this one https://give.asia/campaign/beyond-limits-3-on-ice#/ for Beyond Limits 4.

  • Our charity expedition will accommodate a maximum of 25 participants, which includes 1 to 3 of our dedicated BE expedition leaders. In addition, we will be joined by our Kyrgyzstan support crew, comprising of guides, cook and drivers. Horses and horsemen would be ‘activated’ to help carry all our belongings!

If you plan to embark on this journey solo, there's no need to be concerned. We have organized regular team training sessions in Singapore, providing an excellent opportunity for everyone to connect and build bonds before setting out on the expedition in Kyrgyzstan. Stay excited as we welcome you into this exceptional community of like-minded expeditioners and friends.

  • Do refer to the segment above, where we’d already inserted the itinerary! We'll also be holding a more in-depth sharing during the official briefing session with confirmed participants to go through the detailed itinerary, safety precautions, contingency plans and all other relevant information. This session will take place 2-3 months before the expedition at our office usually on a weekend.

  • Yes, we’ll be trekking 10-20km a day (subject to changing local weather conditions), with a total distance of 40-80km. You should self-train and have several long distance trekking sessions in Singapore under your belt before the trip. But don’t worry because we’ll hold frequent team trainings in Singapore too! We’ve had charity expeditioners over 60 years old. Our mantra is, “Leave no man behind.”

Participants with specific medical conditions must seek a professional doctor’s clearance for the trip.

  • We'll have 3 local Kyrgyzstan guides supporting us on the expedition and 2-3 cooks. They'll be able to prepare different types of cuisine. Try anything from traditional Kyrgyzstan food to western fare! Halal, vegetarian and vegan options are all available.

And calling all strict vegetarians, vegans and Halal eaters! Do note that your food options will not be fantastic as compared to those with a typical diet, as reviewed by past travellers who have opted for these diets while on our expeditions!

Regardless, if you have any dietary requirements, please do not hesitate to let any Beyond Expeditions team member know and we will ensure that you can experience as much of the Kyrgyzstan cuisine whilst maintaining your dietary preferences.

  • We’ll be staying in guesthouses on our first night, in Tamga Village. During the trek itself, we’ll camp out every night in four-season tents; either be several big tents housing 6-8 participants or four-season, two-men tents. You will sleep in four-season sleeping bags, surrounded by the wild beauty of the landscape. There may even be some nights where you get to sleep in a shepherd’s hut!

  • Kyrgyzstan stands out as one of the world's safest destinations for tourists. Our local Kyrgyzstan guides and drivers boast extensive experience in navigating diverse terrains and assessing on-the-ground conditions. Many of our seasoned drivers, in particular, have accrued over a decade or even two of expertise in adventure travel.

Additionally, our BE expedition leaders are well-versed in safety protocols during our expeditions. They are fully equipped with satellite phones and comprehensive first aid kits to ensure your well-being throughout the journey.

As we embark on our expedition, we will have support vehicles accompanying us, transporting vital provisions such as food, water, tents, and our luggage. Do note that, should unexpected weather changes occur, we have alternative plans in place to ensure the expedition continues, albeit with potential adjustments to the original itinerary.

For your peace of mind, we will conduct an official briefing session for all confirmed participants. This session will provide you with a detailed itinerary, packing list, scenario-based questions, and essential safety precautions, among other crucial information. Your safety and well-being remain our top priorities throughout the expedition.

  • Yes, individuals of all nationalities are warmly welcomed to participate in our charity expeditions. Please inform us of your departure and arrival locations so that we can accommodate your travel arrangements. We take pride in fostering a diverse team, comprising individuals from various nationalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

  • Yes, for every charity expedition, we actively seek advocates/participants who are either breast cancer survivors or have been directly impacted by the cause we are supporting.

To support these advocates, Beyond Expeditions covers 50% of their total expedition fee. Please note that we can accommodate a maximum of four advocates on each charity expedition.
